“Best Life ‘Ohana of Maui (BLOOM) organized as a Hawaii non-profit organization and received it’s official 501(c)3 designation in March 2023. Anxious to get started on Maui with a much-needed program to provide a safe, fun gathering place and activities for Maui’s disabled adults, BLOOM dove in headfirst to renovate a space in the J. Walter Cameron Center and held several successful programs for our target population.
It soon became evident, however, in the wake of the devastating fires in Lahaina and Kula that funding cycles, foundations and grants, and large donors will be appropriately directed to those families who lost their homes, their livelihood, and some of them ~ the lives of their loved ones.
Our hearts are saddened by the unprecedented loss of life and property incurred by our beautiful island 'ohana. Words cannot begin to express the sincere depth of emotion, grief, and sense of loss.
Mauians are a tight knit and resilient community, and here at BLOOM, we have faith that the Maui 'ohana will come back even stronger and more vital in the months and years to come.
BLOOM is here to help. Please contact us if you are in need of a wheelchair, walker, stander, catheter accessories, communication devices, or other such adaptive equipment lost during the recent Lahaina fire. We can help you.
For other types of assistance, the Maui United Way is a good first contact. Click here to be directed to their extensive website and resources.
Currently we are ‘reimagining’ the BLOOM initiative with the same mission as before, and with a lot of keener awareness and acknowledgement that physically disabled adults on Maui deserve services and resources and that resource scarcity is real.
Our mission of providing a supportive and accessible collaborative space where adults with physical disabilities aged 18 to 59 can develop social connections, engage with peers, foster supportive friendships, live with dignity, be recognized for their special talents, have fun, and make choices about their lives’ directions remains alive.
We are so appreciative to all that have already supported us and thank you for caring so deeply. We hope you will choose to give us your thoughts and invite you to be a part of the future conversation so we can build a lasting program on Maui serving those forgotten adults with disabilities and the families that care for them.
We have much to do as we prepare for the upcoming Maui County budget cycle, the State Legislature Grant in Aid session and applying for the many possible grants that exist to fund the services we envision for this very dear and important population. They do not deserve to be forgotten.
We appreciate you and we are glad you’re here!”
Most Sincerely,
Team BLOOM
